LIFE is an acronym that means Financial Instrument for the Environment.

It is a European Union programme that was set up in 1992 to support environment and climate action projects.

So far, the programme has co-funded over 5,400 projects.

Up to 2013, the LIFE programme contributed some €3.1 billion to environmental protection.

Over the 2014-2020 funding period, it will have contributed a further €3.4 billion.
